All it took was an end-of-year celebration with friends for Steph to be drawn down the COVID rabbit hole.
One positive test later and it was clear that plans for Christmas with extended family, followed by a trip to Queensland, would have to be cancelled.
Instead 19-year-old Steph (not her real name) and her family, hunkered down for 14 days in isolation in Sydney, accompanied by two unsettling questions: What should they do now? And who will test positive next?
The first Steph knew that COVID had her in its sights was when she received a text from a friend: did she know a positive COVID case had been at the same club in Sydney two days earlier?
Although she was symptomless and feeling well, she headed off for a PCR test and was shocked to learn the next morning that she was positive.
